Ice cream entrepreneur launches Internet sales

Now you can “Skream” for ice cream with your phone or laptop.

A Milford business that sells frozen confections recently expanded into online sales.

Susan Patrick, who also owns the Walnut Beach Creamery in Milford, started her business I*SKREAM because she wanted to create an ice cream treat with no added sugar as a healthy alternative. I*SKREAM sells chocolate-covered ice cream bars made with stevia, a plant-based sweetener.

According to Patrick, I-SKREAM began selling seven flavors online in early February.

The ice cream bars come in pure vanilla, banana, mint, caramel swirl, java crunch, caramel cookie dough and PB crunch. The bars have ingredients like fresh banana purée, organic cocoa nib, pure bourbon vanilla and nutmeg.

“We have been getting online sales, mostly from people who like the product but can’t find it in stores,” Patrick said. “Our plan is to grow online and continue expanding.”

Before being made available online, the bars were sold only in stores, including Market Basket in New England and Key Food markets in New York.

While one might be concerned about ice cream melting while en route to one’s door, Patrick says not to worry. The company did trial runs prior to launching the online service.

The ice cream bars come packed with dry ice, and “It will get to your door rock-solid,” Patrick said.

I*SKREAM was incorporated in 2010, according to the Secretary of the State’s office.

“We started putting out product a couple of years later, as it took a while to get something which tasted close to the regular ice cream we were making in the [Walnut Beach] store,” Patrick said.

Initially I*SKREAM ice cream was sold in pints, but it more recently has been offered as chocolate-covered bars.

According to Patrick, she was inspired to create a no-sugar-added ice cream as a healthier choice. In addition to being a businesswoman and entrepreneur, Patrick is a mother to four children, and she said she wanted to offer them something delicious that’s also good for them.

“My passion was in making something I could feel happy to give to them, but I also made it for anyone who wants or needs to reduce their sugar,” Patrick said.

I*SKREAM bars have about 140 to 170 calories and 3 to 4 grams of sugar.
