The state Department of Economic and Community Development released housing data Monday, which shows that the gross number of housing units permitted during 2022 was 6,496, a 28.9% increase from the prior year.
The state grossed 5,040 new housing units in 2021, a decrease of 10.7% from 2020, the year when the COVID-19 pandemic began.
2022 was the first year since 2019 that the gross number of housing units in the state increased. In 2019, there were 5,973 units, which marked a 20.4% increase from 2018.
The gross number of units does not include units that were demolished that year.
Also, DECD’s data shows that, while 6,496 new units were permitted statewide in 2022, there were 1,514 units demolished, resulting in a net gain of 4,982.
The town with the most new units in 2022 was Norwalk, with a total of 654. It was followed by New Haven, with 513 new units; Newington, with 493; Stamford, with 283; and Farmington, with 282. Hartford only had three new housing permits issued in 2022, along with 12 demolitions, leading to a net loss of nine units.
The town with the highest number of demolitions was Newington, with 494, followed by New London (127), Waterbury (67) and Greenwich (64).
