Housatonic cleanup fund sends $2M for CT fish and marshes

Connecticut will fund a handful of habitat improvement and restoration projects using $2 million from the Housatonic River Settlement Fund, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection announced.

Environmental agencies will remove the Pinshop dam in Watertown and build a bypass channel on the Tingue dam on the Naugatuck River in Seymour. Both projects will allow river herring and other migratory fish to pass more easily.

The money will also pay for marsh restoration projects in Milford and Stratford.

It was the second round of funds the state has received from the fund, was set up following a 1999 settlement with General Electric over contamination of the Housatonic through the release of chemicals from its plant in Western Massachusetts.
