The Hospital of Central Connecticut announced today it will join Hartford HealthCare, parent of Hartford Hospital, if regulators approve.
Both hospitals stopped short of calling it a merger.
The 867-bed Hartford Hospital and The Hospital of Central Connecticut, with 414 beds, have worked together on a number of clinical and educational initiatives, including obstetrics, since the 1990s.
“Providing the highest quality care to all who count on us – in a cost-effective, community-based system – is the goal for modern health care and is the impetus behind this partnership,” Hospital of Central Connectitcut CEO Laurence Tanner said in a statement. “Working together enriches and enhances our ability to do so.”Â
The Hospital of Central Connecticut was spawned in the October 2006 merger of former New Britain General Hospital and former Bradley Memorial Hospital in Southington.
Elliot Joseph, president and CEO of Hartford Hospital and Hartford HealthCare, said that the Hospital of Central Connecticut will remain locally managed, but will benefit from the resources and efficiencies provided by Hartford HealthCare, which runs six in-patient facilities with 1,373 beds.
“We are pleased to solidify and strengthen our existing partnership,” Joseph said in a statement. “Ultimately, this is about strengthening The Hospital of Central Connecticut and Hartford Hospital and enhancing our ability to serve our local communities.”
The state Office of Health Care Access and the Federal Trade Commission are expected to scrutinize the transaction.
