The Hospital of Central Connecticut (HoCC) wants to acquire a majority stake in a surgery center slated to open this fall in Rocky Hill.
The New Britain-based hospital, part of the Hartford HealthCare system, plans to invest just over $399,000 for a 51 percent stake in Rocky Hill Surgery Center, it said in an Aug. 7 filing with the Office of Health Strategy (OHS).
HoCC, which is seeking regulatory approval for the deal, said its investment and involvement would improve quality, access and coordination of patient care, and “enhance the financial position of the center and preserve it as a lower-cost alternative for outpatient surgical services” in the area.
Its primary focus will be ophthalmology.
The Rocky Hill center used to be located in Middletown under the name Personal Choice Surgery Center.
That facility was wholly owned by Dr. John Borkowski until last year, when the Office of Health Strategy (OHS) approved his request to change the business’s ownership structure in order to take on additional equity investors. Now, Rocky Hill Surgery Center is owned by 13 surgeons and Constitution Surgery Alliance (CSA).
The Middletown facility ceased operations last December to relocate to Rocky Hill, where it will operate under the new name. Construction work is underway at the 1111 Cromwell Ave. property, the OHS filing said.
CSA, which develops outpatient surgical centers on the East Coast, has several existing partnerships with Hartford HealthCare. It has a joint venture surgery center with Backus Hospital in Waterford and also provides services for the Hartford Hospital Eye Surgery Center in Newington.
CSA would continue to own an indirect interest in and manage the Rocky Hill facility after HoCC’s proposed investment in it.
