Hospital for Special Care set to open inpatient autism unit

The Hospital for Special Care is preparing to open its new inpatient unit early next month for children with autism.

The eight-bed unit was proposed by Gov. Dannel Malloy in 2010 and is the first of its kind in Connecticut and 10th of its kind in the nation, according to a hospital news release. Malloy last week cut the ribbon to the new unit, which is now physically completed.

Malloy noted that children in need of Autism Spectrum Disorder services previously had to travel out of state.

The unit will provide treatment to meet the complex needs of children who need intensive treatment for aggression, self-injury, or severely impaired functioning that threatens their or others’ safety in the community, the release said.
