Hospital for Special Care, Lions Club partner on vision center

Hospital for Special Care (HSC) in New Britain and the Lions Club are partnering to open the Lions Low Vision Center at the hospital, a specially-modified environment offering comprehensive evaluations and treatments for patients diagnosed with vision loss.

The center, opening Friday in HSC’s outpatient therapy department, will help children and adults better cope with vision impairments, HSC said. After receiving a formal evaluation from a licensed occupational therapist, patients will have access to classes, activities designed to promote independence and low-vision aids such as magnifiers, lighting and nonoptical devices at no additional cost.

The center, HSC’s first entrance into vision assistance, will not offer eye exams or glasses, but provide tips or devices to help patients better cope with their vision loss. Lions Club is providing funding for vision aids, equipment and training, with services provided by HSC-employed occupational therapists.
