The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, which has its administrative headquarters on Long Wharf in New Haven, will open a second camp for sick kids at a donated facility in Maryland, the nonprofit announced Tuesday.
Formerly known as the Wye River Conference Center, the new Maryland camp will be renovated to provide free year-round programming. The Aspen Institute donated the property, which is scheduled to be ready for campers in 2023.
Hole in the Wall Gang Camp CEO James Canton said, “We are thrilled for this next chapter and humbled by the Aspen Institute’s incredibly kind and generous donation – it’s a gift that will keep on giving.” The organization had been seeking opportunities to expand in the mid-Atlantic region, he said.
The nonprofit learned that the 166-acre property in Queenstown, Md., was for sale and the Aspen Institute board was willing to donate a majority of the historic property to Hole in the Wall.
Dan Porterfield, president and CEO of the Aspen Institute, said, “Their mission to provide joy to children with serious illnesses and their families is inspiring, and secures a wonderful future for the Wye River campus.”
Actor, producer and director Bradley Cooper will serve as honorary chair of the committee leading the launch of the new location, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp said in a statement.
“I’ve seen firsthand the life-changing impact of Hole in the Wall’s programs, which is why I’m honored and excited to see that camp is bringing a much-needed escape, a support network and empowering experiences to the lives of some incredibly brave kids and families in the Mid-Atlantic,” Cooper said.
Offering summer fun for seriously ill children, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp was founded in 1988 by actor Paul Newman. Its main camp facility is in Ashford, a town in Windham County, and plans are underway for a 35th summer of programming this year at that location.
