Hole in the Wall Gang Camp taps internal executive as next CEO

New Haven nonprofit the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp has named Hilary Axtmayer its next CEO, effective June 1.

Axtmayer, who has worked with the nonprofit since 2001, most recently served as chief program officer. Her previous roles with the organization include executive camp director and summer counselor.

She succeeds Jimmy Canton, who retired after serving as CEO for 23 years.

Founded in 1988 by actor Paul Newman, the camp provides programs free of charge for children with serious illnesses and their families.

According to the organization, Axtmayer was selected following a nationwide search led by the board of directors with executive search firm Lindauer.

Before joining the leadership team at Hole in the Wall, Axtmayer worked as a field consultant for HIV/AIDS youth programs with SeriousFun Children’s Network and held other roles at youth-focused nonprofits. She holds graduate degrees from the University of Oxford and Columbia University.
