Hitting The Books At Trinity

Paul Mutone brings more than 15 years of experience in education finance to his new post as treasurer of Trinity College.

Mutone worked in various financial capacities, including comptroller, during his 13 years at Vassar College before moving on to serve three years as vice president for business affairs at Marist College.

On Oct. 1, 44-year-old Mutone will become Trinity’s vice president for finance and operations as well as treasurer.

A native of New York, Mutone developed an interest in accounting in the 10th grade. When he had room for an elective, he decided to take bookkeeping.

He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting from Pace University.

After graduating from college, Mutone worked as an auditor at KPMG in Stamford, concentrating on audits for nonprofits, including Vassar College.

Mutone said he assumed he would be a “lifer” in public accounting until the opportunity to work in finance at Vassar came along in 1989. The new job allowed him to spend more time with his family and enter the world of higher education full time.

For the next 13 years, he worked on Vassar’s budget in both planning and development, and he was eventually promoted to associate vice president and controller.

In April 2005, Mutone jumped to Marist College, where he assumed oversight of all the college’s accounting functions, including business affairs, human resources, payroll, the budget, risk management and purchasing.

At Trinity, Mutone will assume responsibilities similar to those at Marist. But he’ll add oversight of buildings and grounds and information technology.

“Since I’ve audited colleges in the past, I see from the inside what is actually involved in education,” Mutone said. “It’s rewarding to see the process of students coming in as freshman and leaving for their own careers as seniors.”
