Hitachi absorbs Wallingford ultrasound partner

Japan’s industrial-medical equipment giant Hitachi Ltd. has acquired Wallingford ultrasound equipment maker Aloka Medical Ltd., its technical partner in recent years.

Purchase price was not disclosed Wednesday.

Hitachi Aloka Medical will keep its Wallingford base, from which the company says it intends to expand its U.S. operations selling and servicing equipment made by Aloka and Hitachi.

Hitachi claims to be one of the world’s leading makers of ultrasound equipment.

David R. Famiglietti, previously Aloka Medical’s chief operating officer, will run Hitachi’s new divison as general manager, the company said.

The deal culminates a five-year technical partnership between both, officials said.

“Combining the experience, knowledge and talents of our two companies,” Famiglietti said, “along with Hitachi’s resources as a larger corporation, will allow us to expand our reach and to accelerate the development of new ultrasound technologies, systems and applications for healthcare practitioners.”

Hitachi also has ultrasound operations in Twinsburg, Ohio.
