Higher sales lift UTC’s 2Q earnings

Hartford aerospace manufacturer United Technologies Corp. said its second-quarter profits grew nearly 8 percent on higher sales.

Profits for the quarter ended June 30 were $1.68 billion, or $1.87 per diluted share, up from $1.56 billion, or $1.72, in the same quarter of 2013.

UTC booked $17.19 billion in net sales, up 7.4 percent from $16.01 billion a year prior.

Its East Hartford engine subsidiary, Pratt and Whitney, saw sales dip from $3.62 billion to $3.59 billion. Orders of large commercial spare engines declined 6 percent.

UTC raised the lower end of its expected earnings range by 10 cents. It now expects earnings per share between $6.75 and $6.85.
