Hfd. HealthCare cuts 179 jobs

Hartford HealthCare is eliminating 179 middle and senior management positions through a combinations of layoffs, attrition and reassignments, according to a letter its chief operating officer sent to employees Thursday.

The letter from Jeffrey Flaks, which the Hartford Business Journal acquired from an employee, called the cuts “a dramatic and difficult step.”

“This kind of change is never easy,” Flaks wrote. “But for us, it’s a necessity.”

The move comes two months after the hospital system announced a corporate restructuring.

Of the 179 positions, 95 are leaving the system. According to the Record Journal, that includes Hospital of Central Connecticut CEO Clarence Silvia.

Forty vacant positions are being eliminated and the remaining 44 cuts are the result of retirements and other measures, according to the letter, which says those who are leaving will get severance, outplacement assistance and other transition support.

Most will leave by the end of the month.
