The owner of Mota Brother Asbestos was arrested after the state Department of Labor found that he has failed to pay more than $469,000 in back wages to employees.
Officials said Arturo Mota, who owns the South Street business, owes 65 employees money for work performed between June 2011 and January of this year. The state also alleges that Mota falsified more than 100 payroll records for 10 prevailing wage construction jobs at educational institutions, including UConn and Central Connecticut State University.
“Our wage investigators gave the employer numerous opportunities to pay his employees for the hours they had worked, overtime wages and the required rate of pay for the prevailing wage construction projects,” Sharon Palmer, the state’s labor commissioner, said in a statement.
Officials did not say where or when the arrest took place.
The announcement follows a similar arrest last month of the owner of Jarosz Welding Co. in Hartford, who officials said owed $109,000 to workers.
