The Hartford metropolitan area and Connecticut as a whole both experienced shallower declines in homeownership than the rest of the country following the 2008 recession, according to a new report from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The homeownership rate in Hartford, East Hartford and West Hartford fell from 68.95 percent in 2007-2009 to 67.76 percent in 2010-2012, a drop of 1.19 percentage points, the report said.

Connecticut’s rate fell 1.53 points to 67.63 percent.

That compares to a national drop of 1.73 points to 64.68 percent.
