Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s budget director says significant compromises have been made on a proposal to tighten eligibility rules for Connecticut’s two-year-old Medicaid health insurance program for needy adults, The Associated Press reports.
Benjamin Barnes told the Appropriations and Human Services Committees on Tuesday that the Department of Social Services is working to ensure that plans to collect more information from applicants will not exacerbate the delays currently affecting other Medicaid applicants. Barnes also said DSS will help people who were found ineligible for the program transition into a private plan.
Lawmakers are holding a public hearing about the state’s application for federal approval to change the eligibility rules, including an asset test for current and new applicants.
State officials say enrollment in the program has grown beyond expectations and eligibility changes are needed.
