Health Care Heroes 2011 – About The Judges

 

 

Maureen Smith    

Maureen Smith is director of consumer relations with the state Office of the Healthcare Advocate. In that role, she is responsible for educating consumers regarding managed care decisions and serving as an advocate during conflicts with managed care organizations. Her unique background bridges both clinical and managerial experience with medical management expertise.

She has been director of staff development and quality improvement at Mediplex of Newington and spent eight years with Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield, serving as manager of the utilization management, government programs, and central administration departments.

She also co-chairs the Coordination of Care Committee for The Behavioral Health Partnership and co-chairs the Survivorship Committee for the Cancercare Consortium.

Linda Honan Pellico

Linda Honan Pellico is an assistant professor in nursing at Yale University, and director of the Graduate Entry Prespecialty in Nursing program where she has taught since 1989, serving as program director and curriculum coordinator.

Dr. Pellico is a clinical educator with a deep interest in how adults learn and how individuals come to embrace the nursing profession with compassion and competence. The graduating classes of 1996 and 2005 each awarded her the Annie W. Goodrich Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest honor a member of the Yale School of Nursing faculty can receive.

Dr. Pellico developed a statewide public education program, “Have Bones, Will Travel,” which introduces elementary school children to human anatomy with an emphasis on health and safety. For this she received the Connecticut Teachers Association Salutes Award and the Seton Ivy Award from Yale University.

Dawn Doraz Harris

Dawn Doraz Harris is the executive director of the Connecticut Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF), enabling her to work with people all over Connecticut, in all different industries. In her role at the CT Chapter she oversees staffing, budgeting, fundraising, major gifts, special events, volunteer development, advocacy and more.

Dawn has worked at the CF Foundation for 16 years, serving as director of field management at the national office in Bethesda, Md., and working with chapters in the Northeast before relocating back to her home state of Connecticut. She began her career with the CF Foundation in fundraising, volunteer development, and special events, including walk-a-thons, galas, golf tournaments, and concerts.
