Health care bill retains possible UConn money

A spokeswoman for Congressman John Larson of East Hartford says a $100 million federal grant that could help pay for an overhaul of the University of Connecticut Health Center was in the health care bill approved by the House Sunday, The Associated Press reports.

Emily Barocas, a spokeswoman for the Connecticut Democrat, said Monday that the grant program was kept in the bill, and UConn would have to compete for the money if it’s still in the final legislation.

The $100 million is a vital part of Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s $352 million plan to overhaul the aging Health Center in Farmington. Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd originally put the money in the Senate’s health care bill.

The project includes a new hospital patient tower and increased classroom and lab space for UConn medical and dental students
