The Hartford Business Journal’s editorial staff won four editorial excellence awards from the Alliance of Area Business Publishers, an industry association that represents dozens of business publications from around the country.
The awards were presented Wednesday during AABP’s annual summer conference, which is being held virtually this year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
HBJ received four silver awards for medium-sized tabloids:
- Best Explanatory Journalism, for “Breaking Barriers”; Greg Bordonaro, Matt Pilon, Sean Teehan. The team analyzed companies across the state to produce a data-driven picture of racial and gender disparities within the top leadership ranks. Additional solid contextual reporting explores what might be done to change the situation and what some companies have already been doing.
- Best Recurring Feature, for Sean Teehan’s “Executive Profiles.” The judges said: “A set of deeply reported profiles puts outstanding interviewing and writing skills on display. A particularly candid story about celebrity chef Tyler Anderson, for example, charts his journey from missteps and miscalculations to the heights of television and restaurant stardom. For the reader, the stories are satisfying as well as memorable.”
- Best Editorial, “Federal gov’t must fill business interruption insurance gap” by Greg Bordonaro. It’s tough to side with big insurance companies, but the writer makes a strong case for protecting them during the pandemic. This column is hard-hitting, accessibly written and high impact.
- Best Personality Profile, “A maturing restaurateur, Tyler Anderson learns that being a celebrity chef doesn’t guarantee success,” by Sean Teehan. This piece tells the story of one chef’s journey as well as the ups and downs of the restaurant industry. Rich in description and personality details, readers are left wanting to say a friendly hello to this kitchen-focused chef during their next restaurant visit.

“It’s a great accomplishment by our editorial staff to be recognized in a national competition among some of the best business journals in the country,” said HBJ Editor Greg Bordonaro. “HBJ’s editorial team works hard every day to keep our readers up-to-date in print and online with the latest business news from around the region.”
HBJ’s sister publications — Worcester Business Journal and MaineBiz, which are all owned by New England Business Media — took home several awards as well.
