Hartford’s Spectra Wired Cafe closes

Spectra Wired Cafe in downtown Hartford appears to have closed its doors for good.

The cafe and lounge, which debuted at 5 Constitution Plaza in 2017, had a sign posted on its storefront Thursday morning stating the business is “closing our doors.” Bar5, a bar and outdoor patio that’s part of Spectra Wired, also appears to be closed.

“We have truly appreciated your patronage,” the sign says. “Watch for an exciting new brand at this location.”

The 5,400-square-foot cafe debuted on the ground floor of the Spectra Boutique Apartments at Constitution Plaza in Sept. 2017. Its opening followed the $26-million conversion of the former American/Sonesta/Clarion Hotel that began leasing its apartments in 2015. Girona Ventures and Wonder Works Construction, both in New York, were the co-developers of the 193-unit housing conversion project.

In summer 2018, Spectra Wired debuted a patio and beer garden next door known as Bar5.

It’s not exactly clear when Spectra Wired or Bar5 closed, or what businesses may replace them. Officials from Spectra Wired and Girona Ventures could not be reached for comment.

Spectra Wired is the latest downtown coffee shop to close its doors in the last two years.

Sarah’s Coffee House, a benefits corporation at 257 Asylum St., closed after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Oct. 2018.
