Hartford’s planning and zoning leader has taken a new position in Boston.
Aimee Chambers, who served as the city’s planning director since 2019, began her new role as director of planning in Boston’s City Planning & Design Department in January.
Erin Howard, Hartford’s economic development director, has become the city’s acting planning director.
Chambers was tapped to help lead a planning overhaul, which Boston Mayor Michelle Wu mentioned in her state of the city address earlier this month.
Chambers will work under Boston Planning and Development Agency Chief of Planning Arthur Jemison.
“I’m thrilled to welcome Aimee to our leadership team, where she will serve a critical role helping us create a more resilient, affordable and equitable future for Boston,” Jemison said. “Aimee’s experience in other municipalities will bring new perspectives and momentum for delivering our bold vision for the city.”
Chambers has experience in urban design, affordable housing development and bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
In a statement, Chambers said she will be “focused on resilience, affordability and equity for the people of Boston.”
Chambers co-founded Semilla Cafe + Studio in Hartford and has worked at the Housing Authority of New Haven. She has 12 years of experience in the public and nonprofit sectors, and has worked as a foster care case manager. She graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in sociology and urban studies and has a master’s degree in community planning from the University of Maryland-College Park.
