Weekly outdoor sales of fresh Connecticut produce resumed Wednesday in Hartford’s North End, with the reopening of the third annual North End Farmer’s Market.
The market is open every Wednesday through Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon on the front lawn of the North End Senior Center, 80 Coventry St.
The market features callaloo, corn, collard greens, watermelon, apples and other locally grown products.
The market began two years ago in response to an increased demand for fresh products in Hartford’s Northeast neighborhoods, where rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are more than twice as high as statewide averages, city officials said.Â
The Hartford Food System, several community based organizations and residents of the Northeast neighborhood support the market, with from the city’s Department of Health and Human Services.
Shoppers who are eligible may use WIC and food stamps as alternate modes of payment.
