Hartford’s new ‘eyes’ pursue parking deadbeats

CORRECTION: An earlier version stated incorrectly that the Church Street parking garage is beneath the Stilts Building.

Hartford’s parking agency is deploying the same technology police use to scan license plates to collect $1.4 million in overdue parking fines from the past 12 months.

The Hartford Parking Authority says its new Parking Ambassadors program has stepped up collection efforts at a time when the agency is underway with a renovation of several parking garages.

One is the $1.2 million renovation of the Church Street garage.

HPA CEO Mark McGovern stressed the license scanners only are used on vehicles parked – not those moving — on city streets.

McGovern said the $1.4 million is but a fraction of the $18 million owed the city from 265,000 unpaid parking tickets going back more than a decade.
