Hartford’s Institute of Living notches $1M to study suicide prevention

A residential psychiatric facility in Hartford says it’s received a $1 million grant to research suicide prevention.

The Institute of Living (IOL), a division of Hartford Hospital, this week announced it received the funding from the New York-based American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The three-year study will be administered by Dr. David Tolin, director of the Anxiety Disorders Center and Center for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at the IOL.

Under the study, clients hospitalized at the IOL will receive four private sessions with interventions aimed at those with suicidal tendencies. The grant will also include consultation services.

Dr. Tolin said private interventions are a rarity for hospitals to offer and called the initiative a “groundbreaking” project.

“We only have people for a very brief period of time,” Dr. Tolin said. “This study is specifically investigating brief cognitive behavior therapy to prevent successive suicide attempts for people who have already attempted suicide.”
