Hartford’s “Butt Ugly” coming down

After years of sneers and jeers as the “Butt Ugly Building,” downtown Hartford’s notoriously blighted structure finally has a date with a wrecking ball, er claw.

At 4 p.m. Wednesday, with Mayor Pedro Segarra and other city and business officials looking on, a crane-mounted hydraulic claw will begin ripping at the brick façade of the H.B. Davis Building, at 1161 Main St.

Preparation for demolition has been underway since September.

The building is expected to be completely demolished by mid-November at a cost of $312,000, city officials said.
