The Hartford school system will spend $54.6 million renovating and expanding 120-year-old West Middle Elementary School in the city’s historic Aslyum Hill neighborhood.
The city school board unanimously approved the project.
Hartford Mayor Pedro E. Segarra said Thursday the city plans to bond $10.92 million of the tab, with the state slated to pick up the remaining 80 percent.
Upgrading the 689-pupil school at 927 Asylum Ave. would expand its capacity to 750 students in grades pre-kindergarten to eight, officials said.

City residents hold about a third of the school’s 150 job opportunities, Segarra said.
