The Hartford Yard Goats kick off their inaugural season this afternoon in Richmond, Va., against the Flying Squirrels at 1:05 p.m. Their first home game, though, doesn’t happen until May 31 thanks to construction delays at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford.
The Double-A minor league team relocated after the end of last season from New Britain where it was known as the Rock Cats. Originally, the team’s season was set to kick off today at home. The Yard Goats will play in Richmond as the home team in the game that kicks off the national minor league baseball season.
Making his Double-A debut and earning the distinction of being the first-ever Hartford Yard Goats opening day starting pitcher is Kyle Freeland. The University of Evansville left-hander missed a lot of the 2015 season because of an injured back.
