Hartford transit adds four alternative vehicles

The Greater Hartford Transit District will add two hybrid electric buses and two compressed natural gas vehicles for its paratransit fleet to serve the elderly and disabled in the region.

The two hybrid electric buses increase fuel efficiency by up to 40 percent and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by storing power while the vehicle is coasting or breaking and using that energy for acceleration before switching to a combustion engine.

The two CNG vehicles will save $1.50 per gallon by using natural gas rather than diesel fuel and emitting 20 percent less greenhouse gas.

All four vehicles were funded by the Federal Transit Administration and the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Clean Fuel Program.
