The city of Hartford laid off 14 workers, eliminated five vacant posts and imposed furloughs on many of its remaining workers, a move Mayor Pedro E. Segarra says was prompted by union opposition to concessions.
The city announced the cuts late Thursday that will save about $700,000 after accounting for cash outs and other employee benefits.
The mayor also said that all nonunion city workers, including police and fire command staff and all non-sworn personnel who make more than $45,000 per year, must take an unspecified number of furlough days.
The layoffs, job eliminations and furloughs, will save the city about $1.1 million this fiscal year, and $2.4 million in fiscal 2013-14, Segarra said.
“As I have said many times, I did not want to lay anyone off,” he said in a statement. “Every layoff and position that is being eliminated was carefully analyzed to ensure that departmental operations and the delivery of services would remain the same if not improved.”
