Hartford postpones fireworks festival

Mayor Pedro Segarra announced Wednesday afternoon that Hartford’s fireworks display scheduled for Saturday has been postponed due to unsafe river conditions.

The strong river current and heavy floating debris in the river made it impossible to launch and secure the three barges where the fireworks are shot, according to Riverfront Recapture, which is running the event. The recent heavy rains in the Connecticut River Valley caused the river to rise.

An alternative date for the Riverfest event has not been announced, although Riverfront Recapture is working on it.

Travelers is sponsoring the event, and Mohegan Sun is sponsoring the fireworks.
