Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam’s pick for the city’s next police chief has withdrawn himself from consideration for the job.
On Saturday, Arulampalam announced that Capt. Tyrell McCoy, of Philadelphia Police Department, had dropped out “due to personal reasons.”
“While we are disappointed, we respect Captain McCoy’s decision,” Arulampalam said. “We remain committed to finding the right leader for our police department who will continue our work in community-oriented policing and public safety.”
The search for a new police chief nominee will resume, he said. Meantime, the interim police chief, Kenny Howell, will continue in his role.
McCoy, who has an MBA as well as law enforcement training, was set to be presented to the Hartford Court of Common Council on Feb. 10.
