Hartford parks cleanup redux for 2011

The city of Hartford’s recent success with a citywide parks cleanup and beautification campaign has sparked planning for a second session sometime next year, city officials say.

Mayor Pedro Segarra’s office announced Thursday preparations are underway for a 2011 campaign based on the vigorous public response to the city’s week-long cleanup last Aug. 23-27.

The next Green Ribbon Task Force meeting is set for Sept. 23 at noon in the Function Room at City Hall, 550 Main St.

Meantime, the mayor’s office released final statistics that give a focused glimpse into the scope of the cleanup that involved city equipment and hundreds of workers, plus individual and corporate volunteers.

Four major city parks — Keney, Colt, Goodwin and Bushnell — totaling 1,120 acres were targeted.

Mowers covered 328 acres; 325 litter bags were collected; 125 trash barrels were emptied; 38 trees were removed or pruned; and graffiti was removed from six buildings and playscapes. All natural debris was recycled.

In addition, more than 13.5 tons of illegal dumping was hauled away, and 30 new seasonal jobs were created, for which there were 450 applications.
