Hartford, New Haven and several other Connecticut municipalities say they may need to take drastic steps to cut their budgets.
Hartford officials decided Thursday to reduce the city’s work force by 132 jobs, including 56 that will be eliminated through layoffs.
Mayor Eddie Perez says police and firefighters will be exempt because their jobs are critical for public safety.
In New Haven, the Vincent E. Mauro School is expected to close, and Mayor John DeStefano says he cannot rule out the possibility of a tax increase.
Smaller communities say they also are feeling the pinch, warning residents they might be forced to raise property taxes to balance the books. (AP)
