Hartford Needs Pro Soccer, Not Another Football Flop

To The Editor:

With three of the four franchises splitting time between two different cities, the United Football League can’t possibly think the advertising revenues, ticket sales or interest will be good, especially when each shared franchise will be playing only one or two home games over the course of their six game season (HBJ Today, “Hartford on roster for pro league,” Feb. 9).

I’m tired of Hartford bringing in minor league teams that clearly never had a chance of success. The Arena Football League came to town on two separate occasions and failed. The Continental Basketball League always had poor attendance. And, the American Hockey League franchise has only generated mediocre attendance in its 12 seasons playing in Hartford.

I’m not a soccer fan, but it seems to me that with Connecticut’s diverse population, which includes many immigrants, major league soccer would be the greater Hartford region’s best option to cater to an underserved segment of our population. There would be natural rivalries with the New York Red Bulls and New England Revolution. And, Rentschler Field is the perfect size to stage such events.
