Hartford mayor surrenders to police

Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez has surrendered to Connecticut state police for the second time this year amid a corruption investigation of city government.

Perez turned himself in at the Hartford barracks this morning. The charges against him were not immediately released, but he said Monday that there was a new arrest warrant accusing him of wrongdoing involving former Hartford state Rep. Abraham Giles.

Giles also surrendered today and was charged with attempted extortion and conspiracy.

State investigators and a grand jury have been looking into a no-bid parking lot deal between the city and Giles. Both Perez and Giles deny any wrongdoing.

Perez was also charged in January with taking a bribe from a city contractor. That case remains pending.

Reader response:

“I am wondering way the residents of Hartford have not called for his resignation? The Mayor has failed the city, crime is up,I do think he has done much lately, how effective can he be in office?” — Patricia Bruhn, Pebbles Graphics
