Hartford mayor orders review of permitting process

Bowing to business and citizen complaints, Hartford’s mayor has ordered a top-to-bottom review of the city’s practices and procedures for issuing permits as well as solutions for cutting the red tape.

“There are several concerns that I hear from residents and business owners no matter where I go and they often revolve around taxes, lack of response and permitting delays,” Mayor Pedro E. Segarra said in a statement. “This latest directive is designed to address the other concerns by developing a comprehensive and systematic solution to more effectively move business and residential permits through the appropriate processes.”

Segarra ordered city Development Director Thomas Deller to issue a report by this Halloween. All other permitting processes will be analyzed under a report due to Segarra by Jan. 31, 2013.

The reports are expected to include:

1. An assessment of current procedures (including duplicative actions);

2. Specific recommendations for improvement and reduction of bureaucratic procedures;

3. Cost implications; and

4. A timeline for implementation.
