Hartford makes early gift to the arts

The city of Hartford has awarded $370,000 to 19 local arts and heritage organizations in the first phase of its commitment to support local arts projects and jobs in 2011.

The 2011 Hartford Arts and Heritage Jobs grant program are funded by the city of Hartford and administered by the Greater Hartford Arts Council.

This grant initiative is designed to create, expand and preserve jobs across a wide variety of sectors by funding arts and heritage programming and projects within the city.

Phase two, the city says, will primarily distribute $100,000 to Hartford artists from Community Development Block Grants. Information about Phase Grant submission deadlines will be released early next year.

Phase one drew 53 applicants, the city says. Recipients were awarded grants ranging from $5,000 to $32,500 to finance new or expanded works, improve facilities or hire youth.

Since the jobs grant program started in July 2009, the city says it has invested more than $1.5 million from its general fund to support arts and cultural projects.
