Hartford law firm Rome McGuigan disbands

Hartford law firm Rome McGuigan – a mainstay in downtown for 41 years  – disbanded Friday evening, officials familiar with the matter told the Hartford Business Journal.

The firm filed a notice of dissolution with the Connecticut Secretary of the State’s office Friday at 11:59 p.m.

The venerable law firm was founded by Austin McGuigan, a former chief state’s attorney who died in March 2021, and Lewis Rome, a former Republican state senate majority leader. Rome died in July 2015.

At one time, the law firm – which was based at One State Street downtown – had about 20 partners. When it disbanded Friday, it had five attorneys, a source said.

Those attorneys were Austin Ryan McGuigan, son of the co-founder; John Bradley Jr.; Joseph Burns; Richard Healey; and Zisca St. Clair. No one from the firm was available to talk on the matter at presstime.

The law firm’s practice areas included business and contract law; municipal law; real estate; and commercial litigation and bankruptcy. It also had an investigations department.

In addition, Rome McGuigan attorneys also worked on cases dealing with tribal finance and gaming, alternative dispute resolutions, and white collar crimes.
