Hartford launderer to pay $525K for EPA violations

Industrial launderer AmeriPride Service Inc. will pay a $525,000 penalty for allegedly dumping greasy wastewater for years from its Hartford facility into city sewers.

Minnesota-based AmeriPride agreed to the settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and federal prosecutors. The company sells and rents industrial work uniforms and operates a cleaning plant on Wethersfield Avenue.

The complaint alleges AmeriPride, despite repeated warnings, violated its discharge permit from July 2001 to March 2008 when it pumped wastewater into the Metropolitan District Commission‘s sewer system, caking sewer lines with a sticky residue that threatened to clog the system.

AmeriPride could not be immediately reached for comment.
