Employment in Greater Hartford is less centralized than it was at the turn of the century, but central Connecticut still is much more centralized compared to the job sprawl in the rest of the nation, according to a new study.
A study released Thursday by the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings ranked Greater Hartford still above the national average in keeping its jobs near its central business district in downtown Hartford.
Greater Hartford has 23.8 percent of its jobs within three miles and 65.2 percent within 10 miles. The national average was 22.9 percent within three miles and 57 percent within 10 miles. Hartford has 515,407 jobs within 35 miles of downtown.
Despite being above the national average, Greater Hartford became less centralized from 2000 to 2010, according to the study. The region lost 41,687 jobs over that time period, and 67 percent came within 3 miles of downtown.
The Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk area was the top small centralized district among the 100 employment regions in the country, with 57.6 percent of its workforce within three miles of its business districts.
