Hartford issues Mar. 14 traffic heads-up

The city is alerting downtown motorists and parkers to expect altered traffic flows on Saturday, March 14, tied to the confluence of the St. Patrick Day’s parade, UConn conference basketball tournament play, and a spirit/cheer championship.

The Hartford Parking Authority said both it and city police on that day will modify the routine traffic flow and parking availability to which many XL Center visitors may be accustomed.

Police traffic barriers will manage the 11 a.m. parade route and will remain in place through the 3 p.m. start of the American Athletic Conference (AAC) semifinals later in the day.

The parking authority also urges visitors to the parade and the 8 a.m. spirit/cheer competition at the Connecticut Convention Center to park south of Asylum Street and use Columbus Boulevard and Whitehead Highway to access I-84 and I-91.

Due to the parade, motorists accustomed to driving north through downtown to reach the XL Center will need an alternate route, authorities said.

Starting at noon, HPD will alter road access and direct all traffic exiting off the highway to travel along defined routes to dedicated parking locations. HPD officers, uniformed AAC volunteers, and signage will guide motorists to parking.

Also, starting at noon for that Saturday only, designated public and private event parking north of Church Street will be $6, the parking authority said.
