Hartford interchange, and 5 others in CT, make list of nation’s worst truck bottlenecks

Six sections of highway in Connecticut have been named among the worst bottlenecks for trucks in the country, according to a study by the American Transportation Research Institute.

The junction of Interstate 91 and Interstate 84 in Hartford, where the average speed is 48.1 mph, ranked No. 21 on the group’s 2023 Top Truck Bottleneck List. 

Other highway sections in Connecticut on the list are:

  • No. 25 – Interstate 95 in Stamford
  • No. 48 – Interstate 95 in Norwalk
  • No. 52 – Interstate 84 at Route 8 in Waterbury 
  • No. 76 – Interstate 95 at Interstate 91 in New Haven
  • No. 86 – Interstate 95 at Route 8/Route 25 in Bridgeport

The analysis used freight truck GPS data to determine the average speed of traffic at more than 300 locations nationwide.

“Despite being one of the smallest states, Connecticut once again ranks near the top in terms of the number of truck bottlenecks…” said Motor Transport Association of Connecticut President John Blair. “Trucks carry 98% of the freight in this state, so when congestion brings those trucks to a standstill, our economy pays the price.”

The worst bottleneck for trucks in the nation is at Interstate 95 and Route 4 in Fort Lee, N.J., where the average speed is just 26.8 mph, according to the study.
