Hartford insurer says it’s launching first U.S. consumer cyber insurance

Hartford Steam Boiler has launched what it says is the first-in-the-nation cyber insurance policy for consumers.

The Hartford-based insurer said its product, called HSB Home Cyber Protection, offers cyber coverage and services for computer attacks, cyber extortion, online fraud and the breach of personal information involving smartphones, computers and connected home devices. Coverage in the past had only been available to business users.

While cyber liability coverage has been available to companies for years, Timothy Zeilman, HSB vice president, said he believes it’s the first package of cyber insurance coverages for homeowners and renters offered by any insurer in the United States. “We have studied the marketplace, and we’re not aware of any others,” he said in an email.

The coverage is added to the homeowners or renters policies of insurance companies that partner with HSB and covers the individuals and family members insured by those policies.
