Hartford Hospital is adopting a new color-coded uniform system that aims allow patients to more easily identify doctors and other hospital personnel.
Under the new system, for example, nurses will wear royal blue scrubs as their uniforms, while technicians will wear hunter green uniforms and phlebotomists will wear gray scrubs.
Hospital officials say the color-coded system aims to improve the patient experience by making it easy for patients to identify and approach staff to obtain information.
Studies show that while patients and families feel it’s important to know who to approach when they have concerns, they can have difficulty differentiating nurses from other staff. As a result, they either feel embarrassed when they approach the wrong person with their questions — or sometimes, just refrain from asking a question.
