Hartford frontline workers get second dose of COVID-19 vaccine

Frontline health workers rolled up their sleeves again on Monday at the Connecticut Convention Center to get their second and final doses of the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

A cohort of Hartford HealthCare providers and staff were the first in the state to get the first dose on Dec. 14 and gathered at the system’s convention center vaccine clinic for their second doses.

Hartford HealthCare opened the vaccination clinic at the convention center on Dec. 28 as a first step toward widening the statewide vaccination campaign.

Once again, a media scrum gathered to witness the shots, with cameras clicking and lights flashing as the workers got their injections.

Connecticut ranks second in the nation of all states on the percent of COVID-19 vaccine doses it has administered, according to data gathered by Bloomberg News.

Gov. Ned Lamont trumpeted the results on his Facebook page. “Connecticut is out of the gates fast,” he said on Sunday.

The state had received 112,500 doses as of Sunday and administered 72,729, according to Bloomberg, with 64.6% of shots given.

Connecticut was second only to South Dakota for percentage of vaccine doses administered although that state got only one-third the number of doses due to its much smaller population size.

Nationwide, only 33% of vaccine doses distributed had been given as of Sunday, and an estimated 1.3% of the total U.S. population had received at least one dose.
