The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has named the dean of UConn’s Hartford campus and chief administrative officer, Mark Overmyer-Velázquez, as chair of its volunteer board of directors.
He succeeds Andrew Worthington, who recently finished a two-year term.
Overmyer-Velázquez has served on the board since 2019 and was elected vice chair in 2023.
At UConn, Overmyer-Velázquez has been an ardent supporter of adding more student housing to downtown Hartford and has worked to expand the university’s presence in the Capital City.
He is a history professor and founding director of UConn’s El Instituto: Institute of Latina/o, Caribbean & Latin American Studies.
In addition, the board elected Marlene Ibsen, vice president of community relations at Travelers Cos., and president and CEO of the Travelers Foundation, as its vice chair.
Beatriz Gutierrez, president and CEO of manufacturing consulting firm CONNSTEP Inc., was elected treasurer.
Ibsen was appointed to the board in 2017 and Gutierrez has served on it since 2022.
