Hartford Foundation for Public Giving

10 Columbus Boulevard, 8th Floor, Hartford, CT 06106 | 860-548-1888 | hfpg.org

Our Mission: Putting philanthropy into action to create lasting solutions that result in vibrant communities within the Greater Hartford region.

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving provides financial and other support to enable individuals and institutions to serve the community. The Foundation promotes informed charitable giving and participates actively in efforts to identify key community needs and opportunities, as well as the means to address them. The Foundation’s Nonprofit Support Program (NSP) helps strengthen area nonprofits. HFPG Impact!, a wholly-owned subsidiary, makes investments in inclusive economic prosperity beyond the scope and range of the Foundation’s traditional grant-making.

Goals

We have spent the past several years actively listening to and learning from residents, donors and grantees, while examining an array of information about our region. One common theme emerged: the Hartford region must achieve greater racial, geographic and economic inclusion to reach its full potential as a vibrant, thriving and contributing force for prosperity. Persistent disparities affected by race, place and income result from decades of systemic factors, structural racism and disinvestment in many communities.

Addressing these disparities requires a coordinated, inclusive approach to philanthropy. As the Hartford region’s community foundation, we have dedicated our experienced team to more closely focus on our youth, our economy and our community.

We are working with community partners to contribute to five outcomes:

• Increased number of Hartford residents living in higher opportunity neighborhoods

• Increased employment and wealth opportunities for Black and Latinx residents in the region

• Decreased barriers to student progress in the region’s highest-need districts

• Increased community safety in Hartford

• Decreased recidivism among residents returning to the region from incarceration

We will continue to evaluate our progress to inform our efforts going forward and will partner with organizations that address basic human needs, support arts and culture, and encourage resident engagement.

Giving Opportunities

Anyone can create or contribute to an existing fund that best suits their circumstances, goals for giving and desire for involvement. Donor-advised funds allow donors to consult with the Foundation’s experienced program staff for guidance on grants in their areas of interest. Unrestricted funds allow donors to authorize the Foundation to use the fund’s income for grants wherever the greatest needs arise. A donor may create a fund to support a favorite organization, cause, community and/or population. We have established a Greater Together Community Fund in each of our 29 towns to support the community in addressing local needs. Visit hfpg.org/donors for comprehensive information on how you can make a difference.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers from the public and business communities serve on various advisory committees, providing guidance to the Foundation on issues related to charitable giving, scholarships, and finance and investment.
