The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving has announced a $6 million investment in arts and culture in the Greater Hartford region over the next two years.
The foundation calls it a “comprehensive initiative designed to launch the next century of creativity.”
The investment comes as part of the organization’s centennial. Some $4 million of the total amount will be disbursed in grants to 48 arts and culture organizations across 13 towns in the region.
A further $1 million will be invested in the existing Artists of Color Accelerate program to create and expand opportunities for local creatives.
The initiative will also launch a new professional development and grant program called Greater Hartford Creatives Alliance through a new partnership with Assets for Artists.
HFPG will partner with CT Humanities to offer a grant and capacity-building program for smaller cultural nonprofits and historical societies throughout Greater Hartford.
“As a funder of arts and cultural organizations large and small, we seek to ensure that inclusion flows through every aspect of the arts and culture sector, from the people who create — to the programs that inspire — to the organizations that lead,” said Foundation President and CEO Jay Williams.
The individual grantees include Hartford Stage, the Bushnell and the Wadsworth Atheneum which each receive $300,000.
Other established organizations include Real Art Ways, the Connecticut Science Center, Theaterworks, the Harriet Beecher Stowe and Mark Twain Houses and the Connecticut Forum, while smaller grants go to organizations including the Hartford Youth Chorus, Sankofa Kuumba Cultural Arts Consortium and the Marlborough Arts Center and Museum.
