Traffic delays on the roads around Hartford slow the average driver 13 minutes per day, the equivalent to 6.6 working days per year.
The Hartford 2010 Drivability Survey – produced by The Hartford, an insurance-based financial services company – found central Connecticut drivers are mostly positive about the roads around the city. Nearly all respondents said the city was drivable with 69 percent saying fellow drivers are courteous.
Despite the positive feelings about the city’s roadways, 59 percent believe the roadway conditions are deteriorating and not capable of handling the current volume of traffic.
To make up for time lost while sitting in traffic, 83 percent of motorists admit to performing over tasks while driving, such as eating, drinking and talking on the cell phone; 21 percent of drivers admit to doing three or more tasks while driving.
In order to make the daily commute more pleasant, the No. 1 option Hartford drivers would prefer is being driven by a chauffeur. President Barack Obama was the top pick as a carpool companion.
Despite the tough job market, only 9 percent of respondents said they would commute as long as necessary to a job they found interesting, although 80 percent said they would be willing to drive more than 30 minutes to work.
