Hartford City Hall getting $1M facelift

Hartford’s City Hall on Main Street will undergo a two-month-long, million-dollar facelift, starting Monday.

Contractor Capital Restoration will perform restoration work on the 86-year-old building’s Beaux-Arts façade. The Hartford Preservation Alliance is overseeing the project. Hartford’s Crosskey Architects is the designer

Work includes the removal and the replacement of the granite steps and the handrails, installation of new lights, and drainage and landscaping improvements.

Construction costs are expected to be about $950,000: $100,000 in municipal bonds was authorized in 2007 and $850,000 was approved in 2008 as part of the city budget process.

Starting Monday, City Hall’s main entrance will be closed to non-emergency foot traffic until work is finished Nov. 4, city officials say.

The building’s other three entrances — Arch and Prospect Streets and Burr Mall — will remain open during the restoration.
